002 What Is Oxycontin?

by Ijeoma on June 30, 2013

Yay! Welcome to Episode 2 of the PharmacistQandA podcast.

This week’s podcast is about Oxycontin. I’m a fan of the A&E TV show “Intervention” and if you’re also a fan of the show then you’ve probably seen an episode or two where the drug of abuse for the week was Oxycontin. Oxycontin is a pain medication and can bring great relief and comfort to those who suffer from moderate-to-severe chronic pain or conditions that cause such pain.

However, in recent years, Oxycontin has also become a major drug of abuse, sold on the streets for what I can only assume is good money for those who deal it illegally. According to CNNMoney, a single tablet of Oxycontin is worth about $50 – $80 on the streets. If used incorrectly though, this drug can beĀ very dangerous and poses some life-threatening side effects, up to and including death. This is certainly not a medication to be toyed with.

As will be the usual pattern of these podcasts, listen for some background information about the medication and then the “what you need to know now” segment. I review some common possible side effects, risks the medication poses and just who should absolutely not be using this medication. I round up with some other good-to-know information.

If you’re still left with some questions, please feel free to use the contact form to send them to me and I just might answer them on a future podcast episode!
